Meet some of our amazing volunteers, hear about what they do and why they give their time to Talking Shop...
Volunteers' stories, January 2023
Isla (13) I have been volunteering at the Talking Shop for about six months and I am usually found working on the till or running food and drink at the Saturday market. My favourite part of volunteering is meeting new people and feeling like I’m really part of an amazing community. I would encourage anyone interested in helping at the Talking Shop to come and give it a go and the lovely team will find a role for you!
Richard (37) I’ve been volunteering at Talking Shop for about ten months, having been long-term unemployed. I got involved because I wanted to learn new skills and meet people. My role depends on what’s needed: sometimes I’m in the kitchen preparing food; sometimes I make coffees; sometimes I serve customers. I enjoy everything because I’m constantly learning, it feels useful, and the people are friendly and interesting. My experience at Talking Shop helped me get a part-time cafe job, but I hope I can continue volunteering.
Mary (76) I have been volunteering at the Talking Shop since it started twelve years ago. Volunteering keeps me busy and active. Over the years I have met new people and made friends from different backgrounds. I enjoy cooking and making breakfast baps on busy Saturday mornings, as well as helping our young volunteers improve their cooking skills. I am looking forward to continuing for many years to come.
