Shop & Breakfast at our Market & Cafe, Saturdays 9am-midday
The market aims to provide good local produce at fair prices. We are a member of Oxford's Community Managed Markets and we believe that every community should have access to good local stuff. We buy and sell some produce ourselves so that you have it every week. We also have a couple of guest stall slots for local producers to sell directly.
Our cafe serves breakfast from 9-12: enjoy coffee from The Missing Bean, pastries, fantastic bacon / egg baps made with fresh local ingredients and more.
At the market get your weekend newspapers and...
a range of fresh breads, including Sourdough and speciality breads, from Cornfields family bakery in Wheatley
Beef, lamb, pork reared at Waterperry's family farm
free range eggs from Beechcroft
milk, farm butter, yoghurts, cheeses (from Nettlebed Creamery and the Oxford Cheese Company)
Keep an eye on our Facebook page (Facebook.com/TalkingShopSandford) and sign up to our mailing list (email orders.talkingshop@gmail.com) for information about guests stalls, workshops and special events.
Join our Saturday Team
We started the Saturday Market & Cafe in April 2011. We have run it almost every week since. About 15 volunteers work in shifts from 7.30 to 12.30, opening to the public from 9.00 to midday every Saturday.
There are various different roles. You could join: Our set up team (the early shift before the customers come in). The cafe team (cooking, serving on the counter, clearing tables and managing the dishwasher). Our market stalls' team (setting up, serving customers bread, veg, groceries etc). Our packing away team (helping put everything away once the market closes).
Shifts start at different times: 7.30am to 9am: Setting up tables etc 8 & 8.30am to 10 / 10.30am - Cafe, Cooking & Stall teams 10.30am to 12.30 - Cafe, Cooking & Stall teams
Some people like to commit to a regular shift, others sign up for different shifts as and when they're available.
All new volunteers shadow experienced team members to get started and will have a Buddy to check in with for the first 6 weeks. We will let everyone know about upcoming opportunities for specialist training (including accredited Level 2 Food Safety & Hygiene).
Anyone who is interested in getting involved is invited to come up to see the space and to have a chat about the project. That way we can see what you're interested in and how you might be able to get involved.
We provide:
full training and support (including from a Duty Manager in your day to day work and a Volunteer 'Buddy' to help you get the most of your involvement with Talking Shop)
a personal learning record (if you want to develop particular skills or confidence)
opportunities for training (for example, accredited food hygiene and safety, mental health awareness or first aid, physical first aid)
work references
a friendly, supportive, inclusive and safe environment!
