Our Cafe & Shop
Join the teams

Shop with us or pop in for coffee and a snack, Monday to Friday 9.30am-2pm
We now have a great convenient 'corner' shop, with a wide range of foods including named brands and fantastic local produce you won't find easily elsewhere - eggs, honey, jams, Coopers' pork, Cornfields bread & Sandford sourdough.
We have a wine selection from The Oxford Wine Company, local beers from Shotover Brewery and more.
We've got the household goods you need too including a big range of SESI refills.
We're open from 9.30am to 2pm on Mondays to Fridays. We serve coffee from Oxford's The Missing Bean, a variety of teas, soft drinks, home baked cakes and brownies, freshly baked pastries, hot sausage rolls & samosas (and of course we're open for the market & cafe on Saturdays too - click here for more info)
During lockdown we had to shut our cafe but we're working on how to restart a takeaway menu in the week. Watch this space!

We need Volunteers: Join the Team & Help us Run things Through the Week
Local shops are a valuable community resource, a lifeline to those who are without a car, who live alone or care for others. Ours is no different.
Working in our community shop offers a great opportunity to get experience in retail, you could learn to make barista coffees, build your customer service skills and share your ideas on how we can support people as they come out of lockdown.
And you will be part of a very friendly team running a much needed community hub for local people.

We are looking for enthusiastic and friendly people to join our teams. We welcome people of all ages, backgrounds and levels of experience (including none!!).

There could be opportunities to develop particular responsibilities if you are interested (for example, shop display work, stock ordering and management, cooking skills, menu planning etc). Full training and support will be provided.
Shop and Café Assistant
As part of our front of house team you will…
  • Play a big part in making our customers feel very welcome
  • Serve on the counter, taking café orders and selling shop goods
  • Make and serve hot and cold drinks and serve cakes and scones
  • Keep the counter and customer space clean
  • Help to maintain the shop, this could include organising displays, re-stocking shelves, pricing goods

Our cafe isn't properly open yet but we're keen to hear from people who'd like to be Kitchen Assistants as soon as we can
As part of our café team you will…
  • Help to prepare simple lunches (full training will be provided)
  • Have the option to be part of a batch cooking team to prepare the menu for the week (full training and support provided)
  • Work with the team to keep the kitchen clean and tidy using our daily and weekly cleaning checklists

How long can I volunteer for?
Our key weekday shifts are from 9am to midday and from midday to 3pm. There are also spaces for people to take on particular responsibilities that they could complete more flexibly in their own time - have a chat to us if something like this would be more suited to you.
You may like to commit to a regular shift, or you may want to sign up for different shifts as and when you're available.

We provide:
  • full training and support (including from your Manager, Ingrid or Kylie, in your day to day work and our Volunteering Manager to help you get the most of your involvement with Talking Shop)
  • a personal learning record (if you want to develop particular skills or confidence)
  • opportunities for training (for example, accredited food hygiene and safety, mental health awareness or first aid, physical first aid)
  • work references
  • a friendly, supportive, inclusive and safe environment!

To apply or to ask any questions please contact our Volunteering Manager Fiona - fiona.talkingshop@gmail.com
Or pop into the shop, say hello and leave your details with the manager
